Nanogirl

Today a scientist came to our school today. She was really interesting and funny. I leant a lot about science and invisible energy. My favourite part was when she put Ms August on a piece of wood and stuck a leaf blower under it. It made the wood and Ms August float. It was a really cool and funny experience and I really enjoyed it.

Media Studies

This term we have started Media Studies. We learn it with Mr Cottrell. We are learning how to use the cameras and operate all of the technology as well as doing a drama and roleplay theme. Our drama is about back in the day when there were goldminers and a man named Frank stole someones miners license. We have to act out what happens in the story. It is really fun and I am looking forward to learning more.

Homework

This is my homework on possums. It is about how they affected NZ and some facts about them as well.

Homework

This is my homework about the differences of saturn and earth. I have included facts and what is different about these two planets.

Ruataniwha Dam

This is my homework on the Ruataniwha dam. It is where it is and what the plans are for it.

Art

For art we had to do something on sustainability. When you tilt this art it shows a different one on each side.

Math

For math we had to make a box that could fit in four chocolate blocks. The winner got those four chocolate blocks. I worked with Bayedan and Jono. This was our box.

Writers Journal

This is another entry from my writers journal. The starter I used was footsteps in the dark.

Footsteps  in the dark. I’m jogging along the alleyway. This is a pretty dodgy place but oh well. I need to get some evidence that there are creatures looming around these areas. I have a photo of one, it’s really blurry though. Orange scaly face with Sapphire blue  eyes, and a long sleek body with a leaf green colour to it. Suddenly I hear a noise to my right. A massive pot hole is opening up. And silently but steady this “ thing” comes out. I fear for my life. I get my phone out and start recording. Then with a slight twitch it turns to face me. I know it can see me. I take a step backwards. Then my phone rings. It’s the office. “ Oi jeremey you need to stream what you're doing. “ We can see your tracking device and there's something big in front of you!!”. “Stream it!!” he shouts. “ Ok OK I say”. As I desperately turn the app on. This news is going on all the way round the world. Then it’s great big head picks up speed and disappears into another pothole. That was the most scariest and cool encounter I had ever seen.

My car is waiting outside the alley. As i get into it there are police car sirens whirring in the distance. It sounds like they are getting closer. That’s when I see the body. It’s lying all bloody in the car right behind me. It has fang marks as deep as my middle finger. Suddenly the “ thing “ comes back up. It engulfs my car in one bite. Crushing it and me. I feel claustrophobic. Then I hear and feel something in my back snap.

Footstep monster is apparently what they call the thing now. Expecting it to be me. Saying that my ghost haunts the place. Well at least I know the true story. ANd
that’s what matters to me most.

Writing

In room 9 we are learning how to make a character portraits. We have to describe the physical features of our character. Thi is mine.

As he looks over the hill towards the marching army, the seventeen year old general gets nervous.Brown hair and ponytail blowing in the wind, while his sharp hazelnut brown eyes scout the area around him. This young man is made for war. Strong and fit. Even  scarred by a tiger which he fought to death. He hears the horn sound. It's time for war. As he sits up straight in his saddle. His face still young, and his sense of smell still fresh. He smells like greasy mutton and bread. The smell common in the tribes. This could be his last time on a horse.

Solo Hour In Nature

In room 9 for inquiry today we had to go outside to the treemendous, we had to just stay quiet and be by ourselves and try to just be calm. Some people were drawing some people were just staring into space, but me, I was sleeping. We found out that to us if you're
relaxed then time goes faster. Here are some pictures of what we did.

Goals

  • I have three goals for next term.
  • To get my Technology flash.
  • To become better at Math, mostly at fractions.
  • To finish everything faster and to a good standard, and also to remember to glue things in.

Inquiry Change Makers

This powerpoint is about what I learnt and did this term and what i did with Change Makers.

Social Dance Reflection

The social dance night was quite fun. It was really hard to hear and I had to shout instead of talking. Things that made the social dance a bit more wild was the sugar. There was loads of sugary foods and drinks and that made everyone go crazy. The dances were fun though. Overall the whole night was cool and I liked it.

Homework Changemakers

For our changemakers homework we had to research a changemaker that we liked or wanted to research about. Mine was Nelson Mandela. I like him because he has changed South Africa and has stopped them from Apartheid. To me I think that he has also changed the world. This is  a slide about him.

Quick Write 3

Hiding under my bed is something. I don’t know what. There have been reports about people going missing. And sometimes they found a bloody stain against the window or walls. It had been spurted everywhere. Then i feel something soft. SOmething really soft and wet. It’s coming up the side of my arm. I froze my heart is beating faster than a Bugatti Veyron being chased by cops. Then i reach down and it’s just my dog. I feel safe that i have him. You know it’s really funny how I feel safe with my dog, like it’s only a dog. Then it sprints away yelping. I can hear him go out of his doggy door and out onto the street.

Then i feel something sharp. Something that smells like would and a little bit of those sharpening things that are suppose to sharpen blades. Then i have the sense that there is someone standing over me. Someone getting ready to swing an axe sort of thing at me. Woah this is real, roll out of bed. I hear an ear splitting crack as my bed shatter in half under the weight of the axe. I get up and sprint downstairs. The figure doesn’t seem to chase me he just stands there. Then when i can see the door he just comes out of nowhere and swings.

Luckily it didn’t get my head unluckily it hit a gas can. Wait what is a gas can doing in my living room? Then everything gets foggy and i get to low ground. I push myself through the doggy door with all the adrenaline going through me, I start to take a video when i get outside. I hear a screech of tires, it’s the police.

They are all armed. One of my neighbours must have called them. Then the figure comes out. I notice it’s a doll. But for some reason it only has one eye. One eye little overalls on and red hair. It starts sprinting towards us. Firearm bullets piercing through it. It starts chopping madly. It only manages to get it hacked into one person though. But it was brutal. He just kept on chopping and chopping into the person until it was just tangled pieces of body and blood. Then the doll gets ready to move onto it’s next victim, but then a huge light blows it up. There was an RPG that was just behind us.

Then I fainted. I wake up in a hospital bed. There was a doll behind me. I quickly open the window next to me and throw it out. Then a doctor comes in and tells me that everything is going to be ok. I just relax after he he says that. Only to find a doll hacking into my chest when I wake up I soon fal back asleep and never wake up again.

Writing

Quick Write 2
Our sentence was I should have lied just then.

I should have lied just then. Then I could have easily just got away with wagging class. The principal doesn’t look impressed. All he says is “ I am so disappointed in you”. And then the worst thing happens. I’m afraid that I have to do this to you, but by what you’ve done I have to do it. He calls 111. Why though. I didn’t even touch the weed back there and sprint away with it. He was the only one that caught me. I’m going to have ask you one more time he says to me before he calls the number. No! I scream. And run out the door right past the office. Just to find all the cops and helicopters outside of school. I start sprinting, I hear gunshots behind and men screaming at each other. I peer around the corner. One of the policemen lunge at me but i dive into a bush. I fall down a hole in there. The cop can’t see me. I feel a stinging pain in my hand. Just to find a huge gash through the middle of it and soft tissue hanging loosely of it. I quickly grab all the leaves that have fallen down on me and put them on my gash. I feel limp and weak. Then I black out. I wake up to the sound of thundering blades on the helicopter. The army men around me have me in handcuffs. Woah I’m only 12. Why are they doing this to me. Then we cross a long wall. I know where we are. We’re in Mexico. I quickly side bash the man on my right and headbutt the one on the left. I grab their parachutes and jump out forgetting that my hands are cuffed. I pulled on the ripcord as it the parachute puffs out. I frantically get into the arm holds. They are really lose on my arms. So as i’m tightening the straps on the parachute the chopper turns round and speeds towards me.

Writing

Quick Write 1
For writing Miss Fisher sometimes just gives us sentence starters and we have to write a story using that sentence starter.

At that moment I knew that I should have just left the bull alone I should have just seen the sign that it was angry. And I definitely shouldn’t have been poking it and showing it a red rag. I soon as I turn round I see that my mates have got on the motorbikes and are yelling at me to get on. Everything is going in slow motion. Then it turns back to normal. I start sprinting towards the bikes with a huge cattle beast thundering towards me from behind. As I hear the revving of the bikes i take a huge leap at the bike and i just manage to make it. But that’s not all. It hasn’t given up. Not even after we close the gate it chases us halfway through the gully until we get to the creek. This is where we practice our jumps on our motorbikes. One of the dirt bike jumps look over the creek it’s this or nothing. As the first one goes over easily we get rammed in the back by the black and white beast. That gave us a little bit of boost and we get over the creek. That’s good but the bad thing is the first one when it landed it stalled and it’s slowly starting to burn. We have to ditch both bikes we race up the hill and head back towards home.

When we get home uncle comes out. He’s always happy and he’s even more happy when he get’s to come with us and take down all the mental bulls. So when we get in we start calling Uncle!! Uncle!! Frantically. We hear him say Hurry Up! And he's already on the quad racing down to the creek with the 308 slung over his back. We see it and it’s even more angry. We know the job. It takes all the energy and adrenaline we have in us to get it done. As I slowly creep up on it from the right side I have to climb up the side of the wet grass and dirt. When I get my foot hold I jump and try to wrestle it to the ground. Then to my left louis comes in and hits it hard with a grunt. We both lean back as uncle slings the 308 over his shoulder and gets it into position. We both tell him to shoot as the bull tries to throw us off. It's like holding onto a tornado. Then we hear a deafening bang and the bull slowly grunts and falls limply to the ground. We get spurted with blood and i even have half a bull brain on my face. Well uncle seems pretty happy. He gets money for the meat. He got to shoot something today. And he has seen his nephews with their first blood. Usually the bull shakes us off when we are holding it down so we never get blood on us but this time we got blood everywhere. I’m tired all i want to do is go back home and go to sleep. And that’s exactly what i’m going to do.

Math

In maths we are doing a statistical investigation. Me and henry are doing if HNI students would want shorter assemblies. This our plan that we did before we made our survey.

Name/s: Tali Henry
Problem: Assembly are too long
Question: How might we stop this

Strategies for investigation
(what are you going to do? How are you going to tackle this?)
  • Make a survey
  • Get as many names as you can for shorter assemblies
  • Go to miss beaumont and give her reasons why we should have shorter assemblies
  • Ask questions that are mostly open.

Break it down!
Who will you need to talk to? What do you need to find out? What background information do you need?
We might need to talk to Miss Beaumont or the People who make the slides for the assemblies.
We could use a tally chart/send out a survey
Ask kids if they feel bored or tired when the assemblies go on.

How will you record your data?
(Tally? Electronic spreadsheet to collate?)
Spreadsheet.
Google Docs

Make a prediction
What do you think the solution or answer is?
Most kids will want shorter so it should be shorter assemblies
All the students will want longer assemblies unless you get to do something fun after assembly is done.

Your survey question
Open or closed question?
The reason behind it (how will this data help you in your investigation)
What kind of responses are you expecting from this question?
Why do you think that Assemblies should be shorter than they are.

If you could change the assemblies at our school how would you change them.

What Gender are you.

What is the most boring part of the assembly for you.

Do you think that the assemblies are a complete waste of time.

When the speakers are talking do you switch off from what they are talking about.

Open

Open
More reasons to have shorter assemblies

This will tell me ideas that the kids would want to have different subjects when assembly is going on

This will tell me if boys might want shorter assemblies but girls might want the assemblies to stay the same

This tells me if the kids are enjoying the assembly or just think it is boring.
I think from the students everyone will say they want shorter assemblies.

Just make them shorter

Male and female

People talking about random things

What possible barriers might you face?
What might you need to do to counteract these barriers?
The teachers might not like the idea and try stop it.
Miss Beaumont might be offended by it and tell us off.
Kid’s might not respond to the survey so we will have to go and ask them front up
If they don’t make shorter assemblies the kid’s could go on a sort of strike.

Olympic Report Sevens

In room 9 we have been working on the olympics and some of the sports in them. My sport was sevens. I chose that sport because i like how it is really  really fast. This is my report on Sevens Rugby.

From the 5th to 6th of August, countries from around the world will be competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Sevens is one of the events that is held there, it involves seven men playing a game of rugby. Sevens is a game that was made quite along time ago almost two hundred years ago. Some people are getting sick of this sport as it becomes a little bit more boring for others to watch. You also may think who invented this game well that’s what I’m going to tell you in this.

In 1999 it was the first ever Sevens World Cup of seven men on one huge rugby field. Now that might sound strange but it is actually the sport of Sevens Rugby. This sport has more than a little history to it as well. It was basically invented in Scotland by two men who needed an idea that would make everything cheaper for them, they needed everything cheaper because the rugby club they played for was poor and they couldn’t afford to send twenty two men around scotland playing each other. So they made a game where there were only seven men on the field. That club was called Melrose and that was where the first sevens game was played. In 1883 Melrose played Gala in a game of sevens and being the club that invented it they won. So if we calculate 1883 to 2016 that means that sevens has been played for about 133 years!.

I wonder why there isn’t many people in that stadium mum. That might be something you would say when you watch the Wellington Sevens Tournament. The Wellington Sevens used to be the most popular tournament of Seven’s maybe on earth. It had everything everyone you needed and wanted. You were able to dress up in funny and wacky costumes there were places where you could buy drinks and food, it was everything you needed for a good time. And it was also so popular that the tickets would sell out in at least a minute. But then it all just stopped. No more wacky or funny costumes no tickets selling out in about a minute or less No more big rugby stars coming from the All Blacks to have a game of Sevens for their country. And all of this happened just because of one thing. Families were complaining of it being too loud and crazy for their children. So obviously something had to be done. The Sevens Rugby Committee made it so that it was “ Family Friendly”. Which basically means that you can cut out all the night games and turn them into ones that are being played in the day. Take out all the wacky and fun costumes. And even just taking away those small things that would lead to the biggest one. The vibe. It just left so now you may know what happened to that stadium and why there are no people inside of it.

When your grandpa says “ well back in my day” sometimes that may switch you off. Well this might not. In the 1800s there was a man called ned Haig. He was a butcher. He was also a local rugby player. This was in Scotland. Now this man would work really hard at being a butcher so he and his team could travel around Scotland and play all the other teams and play in the other competitions. He and his friend David Sanderson were getting really tired of not being able to pay or play. So they decided that they needed a game where the were less men on a field. To them it seemed like a great idea and and efficient to. It would be cheaper to travel and everyone would get more time to run with the ball. But the only problem was how were they going to get it all around Scotland and get a competition going. Well they didn’t know so they just started playing it in their club and the word went round that the Melrose Rugby club were playing rugby but they only had seven men on the field. So that was how it got around and the people who invented it.

A few fun facts are, Argentina was the first country apart from Scotland to play Sevens Rugby, Melrose Rugby club won the first Sevens title in the world.

Interesting body facts

Today we had to find out three interesting facts about the human body. After that we got to pick our favourite fact that we had written down and turn it into a graffiti sign to put on our wall.

Art

This week room 9 was learning about the olympics. We had people using coloured tissue paper the colour of all the rings and making them into the olympic rings. The other's got to draw flag's with the country's that are competing. I did Samoa because I am part Samoan.

Art

Last week room 9 did some Te Reo Maori art. We had to colour an A4 piece of paper in with wax crayons. Then when we had finished we had to paint it all black. Then when It had dried we got toothpicks and scratched patterns onto it. We also got a tiki to colour in with chalk pastel so we could sort of mix the colours up. This is mine.

1st day at Electronics

The get ready get thru website tells us four things we need to do to get ready for a disaster.

1. Learn about disasters
2. Create and practise a household emergency plan.
3. Assemble and maintain emergency survival items
4. Have a getaway kit

The emergency survival items tells me that i need a torch with spare batteries or a self charging torch.

I am going to design and make some kind of light for an emergency. Image result for get ready get thru

Idiom

Room 9 had to make a poster about idioms. An idiom is like a sort of saying but when you say it you're not actually meaning for them to do so. An example would be " Break a leg" when people say that they don't actually mean that they want you to break a leg they say it to say good luck. We had to make a poster about some and where they came from and what the meaning behind it was.

Reflective Symmetry

Yesterday for maths we got to have a play around with a reflective symmetry game that shows us how to use it. It also allowed us to make cool shapes this is mine.

Interesting Body Facts

Today we made one fact each to make a wall of interesting body facts. First we had to find out three facts about the body that we didn't know. Then we had to pick our favourite one to put on a site which turns it into graffiti. When we finished that we just had to share it with Miss Fisher so she can print it out and make a graffiti wall in our class.

ANZAC

I had to put myself in James Martin's shoes who was the youngest Australian soldier to fight in WW1. I had to write a letter to his parents pretending that i was him.
 25.4.015

Dear Mum and Dad

My troop has just landed in Gallipoli. It is such a beautiful site, apart from the trenches and all the weaponry it looks fantastic! The smell is horrible though there are already quite a lot of dead bodies from the trip and the smell of smoke is everywhere i go. My mate that i room with is such a good bloke his name is Liam and he is such a good bloke, i think that you would love him. He is from New Zealand and he is quite craftsy. He made me  little pockets inside of my coat so i could sneak a little extra food for both of us. We have been marching forwards to keep on making more territory. The men that dig the holes look really strong and the they can dig trenches in under a minute. There have been some close calls when me and Liam have been joking around and we almost got ourselves killed from keeping a broomstick and throwing it to each other. The Major told us off but we were in hysterical laughter afterwards. Oh and a broomstick is one of the Turks bombs. I know that you didn’t want me too but i joined the Imperial force without you knowing and that’s why i have been gone lately. But don’t worry i am perfectly safe. The food here is horrible all it is is canned beef straight out of a can and sometimes stale bread with jam on. The jam tin’s are really useful for making homemade bombs. Liam taught me how to make those and they're really fun to throw. They make a sort of fizzzz! Sound then when it explodes sometimes the leftover jam comes over to our side. We keep on moving closer which makes me feel more scared each time because the guns are getting louder and i can smell this really weird smell which is kind of like the gas  we use on the BBQ except worse. Every time we’re marching we have to step over dead bodies with either bullet holes in them or paper white eyes from a new weapon that the Major hasn’t told us about. The Major has told us about the new weapon which is deadly gas and that if one bomb gets into our trench that we have to soak a handkerchief in urine and put it up to our mouths. I will have to stop writing now because I have to charge toward No Man’s Land which is the middle part which splits up the allied trenches and the enemy's trenches. I'll do my best to stay alive, just joking i have lots of friends that will help me get through this dreaded war.

With love from your son
James Martin

Writing

This week Room 9 had to make a poem based on ANZAc. Miss Fisher gave us a certain thing to write and we had to describe it in a certain amount of lines. I wasn't feeling that good about it because i'm not very poetic but to me i thin that it turned out pretty good.
It says                                                                A Soldier's Time

My soldiers are almost dead. We all have a nasty chest infection. Our trench has been taken over and we were the only ones that flead. I step too close on a mine, bad detection.

Running as fast I; can. The bullets and shells are all behind me. I trip over a rusted pan. I am finally back with my soldiers i know it was bad of me to flee but my squadron needs me.

All of the men in my group are struggling to live.. Can’t see where they're going half of them are blind. Some of them only have socks on that are as thin as a piece of thread. Gas bombs behind we enter a new trench with gas almost all over it we each find a gas mask, a lucky find. There are a lot of soldiers falling to their feet, almost at our original base even though we've left about 52 behind.

“PSHH. GAS boys! Put your masks on and get into cover now! “

We are covered in a massive cloud of green smoke. Most of us have put on our gas masks, except for one, one tired stupid man who could not be bothered putting it on. He runs around and around like a headless chicken. Then the sound of a thud, a dead hand scrapes the edge of my boot. He is gone.

The gas is as thick as a black sky. It is the colour of dark pea green soup. All of us huddle in a bunch to keep each other warm and safe. When it’s all over we have still got the same amount of as before. We are lucky, that was close.

A blood curdling scream. Hands grasp my shoulders and a bad coughing fills the air. My comrade has run away from his gas mask team. To die from the enemy’s gas, it’s just not fair.

Try and imagine just imagine walking behind that death cart. You are looking straight into a dying man's eyes. They are an airy cloud colour white and his breathing is shallow. But the man who is in the cart making sure that the dead men don’t fall off. Talks to you with a voice soft and mellow. He is dying but still in shock. When he said that it gave you a shiver down your spine. You wonder what his wife would say. His children crying while he is slowly dying.

What does the man sound like? We throw him into the wagon. He is unconscious but he is still breathing, breathing disgusting gurgling shallow breaths. His eyes are burned and white as white. His breathing stops his lungs have stopped and popped.

If you had experience all these things that the soldiers had experienced what do you think you would feel like. Digging trenches, staying up late with the risk of bombs falling on your head and fearing the fact you might never be able to go home again. Never getting to see your families again. Now once you had experienced that, could you say it was sweet and glorious to die for your country.

Technology

                                                                Technology

My technology group ( 9B) are working on how to make a pizza and what attributes we want it to be. Miss Bassett picked two boys and two girls two make a mini pizza for the class to share. Miss Bassett only gave the students a certain amount of ingredients and she was the one who got to pick them. The pizzas ended up really nice. This is a picture of them.

For our inquiry we had to make an identity collage which is a side photo of us with all the things that we think represent us. My main one i like is Sonny-Bill Williams and i used him because he is one of my favourite rugby players and that i like to play rugby.

Room9 Pou Whenua

                                                                Room 9's Pou
Last week Room 9 got a piece of paper with four rectangles on it. The reason we had them is because we were making our Pou Whenua for the school to see. Each one of us drew what we think would be good to be our Pou there were a lot of great ideas but we were only aloud one for our Pou. Nina's won the most votes so hers was the one we were going to show the whole school. The people that got to help out with making the Pou was Carter Ben and Anja because their drawings had the second most votes. This is what it looked like.

P.E

                                             Capture the rugby ball

When my class goes out to P.E we all like to have a game of capture the rugby ball.
Capture the rugby ball is basically like capture the flag except there's a rugby ball instead of a flag. There's also a bit of a twist. With the rugby ball when you get out of the circle you have to pass it to one person and after that you can kick it pass it and do whatever as long as it doesn't touch the ground. Also if you get tagged by someone on the opposition you have to sit down and wait for one of your team mates to tag then you have to cross the halfway line and then...... your safe. The biggest rule in capture the rugby ball is to not hurt people and play by the rules because if you don't play by the rules then none will want to play your team or class again.

Two weeks ago we were set to make a poster about how to be cyber safe. It took me a little while to get started because i had a really blank mind and couldn't really remember what we had done. Once i had remembered what we had done I really just wanted to focus on my writing instead of making it pretty (I had made it look good at the end so dont worry).

Gold Book Goals

Gold Book Goals for Terms 1 and 2

My gold book goal for terms one and two is to get a technology flash by the end of both terms.

I will achieve this by entering as much technology opportunities as possible and do really well in class.

By the end of year 8 i hope to have achieved an honors badge and at least one star for each category.
